History of the Club
The Northern Suburbs Dog Training Club was founded by Jim and Miriam Powell in 1967. Until 1992, our Club trained at the Claude Cameron Grove in Wahroonga. Then in October 1992 we moved to new grounds at St Ives Showground, where our new clubhouse was built during 1993.

In 1997, the Ku-ring-gai K9 Award was introduced in conjunction with the Ku-ring-gai Council and the Metropolitan Mid-Week Dog Training Club. In 1999, Saturday morning agility training was introduced. We now run agility classes twice weekly and have added Flyball and Dog Dancing Classes for members.

The obedience training methods used by the Club are those developed by Jim and Miriam Powell, based on their vast experience in Dog Obedience Training. The Powells always took an active part in the Club, mostly in the role of Chief Instructors, with Jim Powell drafting the Instructors' courses and training all the Club's new instructors until his untimely death in 1991.

Our Club enjoys the reputation of being one of the top obedience clubs in NSW. Our members have competed in trials at all levels of obedience and agility and have been awarded the top honours in the obedience and agility worlds. Basic companion obedience starts with our popular Puppy and New Member Classes.

Our aims
The aims of our Club are to:
  • promote in any way the training of dogs of any breed to be obedient, companionable and useful.
  • encourage, assist and instruct members and other interested persons in matters concerning training and/or working of dogs.
  • conduct training exercises, exhibitions, obedience trials or parades, and to hold such other fixtures as may be permitted by the Royal NSW Canine Council.
  • promote public interest in the training and/or working of dogs.
  • educate and encourage members, breeders, exhibitors and judges to abide by the requirements of the standards as approved by the Royal NSW Canine Council for the conduct of obedience trials.
  • promote good fellowship and sportsmanship amongst members and those participating in Club activities.
  • inform members of and to make known to them the laws and regulations in the state of NSW relevant to the ownership of dogs, their care and also the responsibility of owners for the conduct and actions of their dogs.
  • foster relations with other Clubs having similar aims.

Our instructors
All of the Club's instructors have trained a dog to at least Novice trialling stage (4th class) or agility and have completed at least one course in Dog Obedience Instruction. Some have progressed further, completing advanced instructors courses through the Club or through the Royal NSW Canine Council, gaining obedience, tracking, agility or endurance titles or becoming judges of dog obedience, agility or breed judges.

There is a wealth of knowledge among the Club's instructors to help you with any problem you may face with your canine friend.

Ku-ring-gai K9 Award
The Ku-ring-gai K9 Award is just one of the activities our Club offers. It is run in conjunction with the Ku-ring-gai Council and the Metropolitan Mid Week Dog Training Club. It is designed to equip both dog and owner with some basic education in obedience and socialisation, to help make you and your dog better citizens of the local community.
